Design and Technology
It’s tough to decide where to begin when talking about the technology and design features in the P790 irons. There’s a lot going on.
Let’s start with SpeedFoam. While this stuff has been in the P790 irons from the beginning, it’s 69% lighter in this newest generation. What does that spell for golfers? More speed and distance.
Since the SpeedFoam is so much lighter, it allows weight to be redistributed elsewhere in the clubhead where it’s more efficient. In addition, lighter SpeedFoam causes the face to flex more at impact.
In addition to more ball speed and distance SpeedFoam creates a softer, more muted sound at impact. This is something most better players prefer.
P790 irons are made of 8620 Carbon Steel. In certain areas of the clubhead, this metal is 37.5% thinner than earlier versions. This means the CG is lowered which results in higher launch conditions.
The most important part of thinner construction is in the face. It’s just 1.5mm thick. That means more flexibility and efficient transfer of energy between the face and ball. Again, more distance here too.
This generation of the P790 irons also have a heavier tungsten weight in the toe than the first two versions. This translates to incredible stability and forgiveness through impact.
And what about this new Intelligent Sweet Spot? It’s 60% larger than the 2017 model. It’s also situated lower in the face so that thin shots aren’t as thin as they used to be.
In the seven-iron on up, the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket aids in face flexibility and allows more room for error on thin shots too.

The newest P790 irons come with a three-iron through pitching wedge and 50-degree approach wedge.
If you prefer steel shafts in your irons, the True Temper Dynamic Gold VSS comes stock. It’s available in regular, stiff, and extra stiff flex.

Our Experience
I’ve had nothing but good things to say about the TaylorMade P790 irons since the first ones came out in 2017. In my opinion, they’re one of the most versatile irons in the game.
The newest version only furthers that reputation.
I was particularly impressed with how hot the face was. The ball came off noticeably hotter and my carry distances were a touch longer throughout the bag.
The responsiveness and sound were great as well. Even though these clubs are considered distance irons, they feel like blades that are meant for shot making and playability.
In short, this is a solid golf club that I can see putting in my bag long term.
