If you struggle making solid contact with your driver, there’s no question that you should be playing the largest, most forgiving clubhead you can find. Most of today’s drivers are designed this way and their benefits are proven. But if you’re looking to hit a variety of different shots and control your driver without sacrificing distance, the TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver is right up your alley.Just because this club is small in stature, doesn’t mean you can’t tee it high and let it fly. However, the benefits of the smaller head allow seasoned players to have more control of the shots they hit off the tee.If you want to tee it low and squeeze a cut into play, no problem. Faced with a long second shot carry into a par five? Hit this club off the deck.

When I was a lot younger than I am now, I remember hitting the Callaway Big Bertha Driver for the first time.  Back then, I thought the hottest driver in the game looked like a Volkswagen on a stick it was so big compared to everything else.

That was then and this is now.  The drivers of today are gargantuan – most max out at 460cc.  And it makes sense, a bigger head means more mass, more surface area, more forgiveness, and more distance.  We are truly in the bomb and gouge era.

But that doesn’t mean that big drivers have to be everyone’s choice.  What about those of us that want the ability to hit some different shots and still prioritize accuracy over distance?  Is there anything out there?

The answer is YES!  It’s the TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver.

Back in yesteryear, this club would have looked big.  By today’s standards, it’s tiny.

Does it still perform?  Most certainly.  Keep reading to find out why.

Key Features

  • Multi-material construction keeps the CG low for high launch while maximizing MOI for plenty of forgiveness.
  • Thru-Slot and Speed Pocket Technologies deliver fast ball speeds for distance maximization.
  • Small clubhead profile allows you to play this club off the deck.

TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver Detailed Review

Design and Technology

TaylorMade leads the way when it comes to drivers.  As much as Ping, Callaway, and Titleist like to think their drivers are the best in the game, the proof is in the pudding.  More golfers play TaylorMade drivers than any other brand on the market.

And while most TaylorMade drivers are of the oversize variety, their 300 Mini Driver is the only one of its kind currently on the market.

This club’s tech starts with TaylorMade’s proven Twist Face Technology that optimizes solid shots and corrects mishits off the toe and heel.  You’ll find this tech in most every driver TaylorMade makes.

After forgiveness, the next important factor is a reputable driver is ball speed.  Thru-Slot Technology increases the transfer of energy from the clubface to the ball at impact for explosive ball speeds.  Fast ball speed equals more distance.  Who doesn’t like that?

Lastly, multi-material construction has been strategically engineered on a variety of levels.  First, it’s optimized to concentrate mass in the most important spots in the clubhead.  Second, it positions the CG low in the clubhead so that golfers can get the ball in the air quickly.  This is especially important for a driver this small.  Lastly, the weight is distributed in such a manner that it maximizes stability through the hitting area.

Suffice it to say there’s no shortage of complex tech behind the TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver.

Our Experience

Years ago, I played a TaylorMade Mini Driver.  It was the 420cc head in the SLDR model.  To date, it was one of the most versatile drivers I’ve ever hit.  In theory, I could hit it high, low, and sometimes where I was looking (more than I can usually say).

Though I don’t own TaylorMade’s new 300 Mini Driver, I’ve had the chance to hit it a number of times and can confirm that it performs just as well if not better than the SLDR version.

Despite the smaller head and shorter length, I didn’t notice much loss in terms of distance compared to my current standard length 460cc driver.

What I did notice, however, was the workability of the 300 Mini Driver.  I was able to vary my tee height and consistently hit a number of different shots.

It’s no secret to me why this driver has proven so popular with advanced players (even though I’m anything but).

Conclusion

As golf nerds, we all associate TaylorMade with big driver heads, explosive distance, and cutting-edge tech.  There’s no denying they know what they’re doing when it comes to the Big Stick.

Furthermore, their driver prowess shows up in their willingness to take the leap into the development of the 300 Mini Driver.  Even though this club might not be ideal for every golfer, it delivers on every single level for seasoned players looking for maximum performance in every way, shape, and form.
