There is often a tradeoff between what golfers want to look at when putting and what putter style gives them the best performance on the greens. Classic blade putters with clean lines can sometimes allow golfers to aim more easily and enhance focus on the greens. The challenge with these smaller shapes is that what they gain in term of visual appearance, they give up in forgiveness and performance. This is not to say that every golfer will putt better with a mallet putter head but generally, larger sized putters have more capacity for forgiveness and getting putts more near the hole more often. Forgiveness is a measure of the moment of inertia (MOI) of a putter. The resistance to twisting on off center strikes offers protection for golfers that don’t always hit the ball out of the center of the club face. The best putters will also help golfer keep their ball speeds consistent across the putter face – enter Evnroll.
How Do You Add Forgiveness to a Blade Putter?
Evnroll putters have been celebrated since their release for their industry-leading groove technology. The Evnroll putter grooves are wider in the middle and narrower on the edges. The result of that groove pattern is a putter face that is more forgiving on strikes in the heel and toe of the putter. When golfers strike the golf ball in the toe and the heel the start line of their putt is alerted. For right handed players, putts struck in the toe will start further right. Putts from the heel will conversely begin further left. Evnroll’s groove patterns correct these strikes and drive your putts more near the hole from both the toe and heel.
But What About the Shaft?
Another area that has been recently explored for its performance benefit is the putter shaft. As putter heads have gotten heavier, putter shafts have remained largely unchanged. Breakthrough Golf Technologies identified this as an area for improvement and created the Stability Shaft. Blending high performance graphite with the stability of steel has been pioneered by Breakthrough Golf Technologies. Their Stability Shaft offers higher moments of inertia and forgiveness when installed on a putter. Seeing the advantages this can make, Callaway and other putter shaft manufactures have quickly followed suit.
What We Did:
Knowing that the Evnroll ER1.2B Tour Blade offers enhanced forgiveness from its groove patterns and the Stability Shaft further increases the MOI, we put the two together to see if we could get mallet performance in a compact, beautiful shape.
What We Found:
The Evnroll ER1.2B Tour Blade putter complemented with the Stability Shaft did in fact offer more forgiveness and control than putters similar in shape. On mishits, ball speeds stayed higher than comparable models and putts finished closer to the hole than the competition. Lag putting was also enhanced likely due to the fact that the Evnroll grooves and Stability Shaft protected against larger mishits from longer range. Normally, as the putting stroke becomes longer, the higher likelihood there is for mishits and this is when mallet putter can really have an advantage. The Evnroll ER1.2B Tour Blade and Stability Shaft closed the gap that normally exists on putts 15 feet and longer.
Additional notes about this combination are also important to consider. The Stability Shaft feels slightly different than traditional steel. The Stability Shaft comes in two models, a Standard and Tour offering. The Tour model, which was the one built in the ER1.2B for our test, is more similar in feel to traditional steel shafts. While the feel is similar the material difference is apparent. The Stability Shaft distributes the weight of the total putter build effectively and allows for a smooth pendulum putting stroke.
